St George’s Church is a redundant Anglican church in the village of Shimpling. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building, and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. It stands at the end of a short lane to the south of the village.

The Shimpling War Memorial Book

In 2014 Rosemary Steer of Starston spent time, a lot of time, researching the twelve men of Shimpling who are recorded on the Shimpling War memorial, and this book is the result of that research.

The memorial itself, carved from oak, is on the North Wall of St George’s Church, and carries the name of twelve men of Shimpling who made the supreme sacrifice in The Great War, as it was then known. Rosemary found another two men, victims of the War, who had links with Shimpling, and has given some of their details in this book.

The original book was in St George’s for a long time, but seems to have been removed during the period of COVID. However, a scan of the book was taken, and now the scan is here, on the Parish website.

Although Rosemary was unable to find details of any casualties in the Second World War it is now believed that Walter Jack Briggs, who died on 10th May 1942, and who is commemorated on the Alamein memorial was a Shimpling man.
